One of my best friends here in A-Town left today for Hotlanta. I knew it was coming. I knew it was coming when we became friends 7 years ago. PhD students eventually finish their dissertations, graduate and get jobs, not usually at the university where they've studied. I am very proud of her accomplishment and happy that she got a job in a competitive academic market. This is what she has been working toward for many, many years. And I have no doubt at all that we will remain friends. She crossed the line from friend to family years ago, so she's not getting rid of me any time soon. But the reality of her leaving didn't hit me until last week and it really sunk in this morning when she was loading her car. I am going to miss her desperately.
